MOV Surge Arresters                (Course Number: ARR201)
Fee:  $450 per person
Length of Course:  Two days (not including travel time) Seating is limited

Course Contents
: Learn how to specify Surge Arresters to effectively protect Distribution, Substation and Transmission Systems. This course will cover application theory and the historical development of overvoltage protection for utility systems. Discussion will also include engineering design considerations and application issues such as insulation coordination.  A Factory Tour of Surge Arresters in production will also be included.
Who should attend: This Seminar is intended for Distribution, Substation or Transmission Standard Engineers, Operations Personnel, Substation Packagers and Consulting Engineers.

Course Contents
: Learn the dynamics of earth anchoring systems as they apply to Electric Utilities and Telecoms. A.B.Chance ® Company developed the first patented “Earth Anchor” in 1915; originated power-installed anchoring systems and continues to lead the industry in anchor technology. This course will cover the theory and the actual installation of various types of Anchoring systems.  A tour of the Anchor Manufacturing facility will be included.
Who should attend: This Seminar is intended for Electric and Telecom Utility Engineers, Operations Personnel, Construction Foremen and Consulting Engineers.

Presenters:
Brian Erga, President and General Manager, ESCI Inc.
A 1978 graduate of the University of Washington School of Electrical Engineering, Brian has been involved in the electrical utility industry for more than 33 years. He is a distinguished Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and active member of the IEEE Engineering in the Safety, Maintenance, and Operations of Lines Subcommittee (ESMO). Mr. Erga is currently chairman of the ESMO Induction Task Force and an active member of many IEEE, ESMO, Federal OSHA, ANSI, and ASTM committees, work groups and task forces.

Mr. Erga is an elected member to NESC-C2 “Work Methods” Committee and is active in the revision of the 2007 NESC. He is also chairman of the ESMO Mechanical Equipment Task Force, chairman of the ESMO Induction Task Force and co-chair of the ESMO Underground Operations and Maintenance Work Group. He is an active member of many IEEE, ESMO, Federal OSHA, ANSI, and ASTM committees, work groups and task forces.

Brian Erga is considered an expert in electric utility design, construction, maintenance and operation. He has been deeply involved in the hearings and proposed revisions to OSHA 1910.269 and OSHA 1926 Subpart V. He is also an industry expert in all types of personal protective grounding, has published numerous papers and articles, and is knowledgeable in all Federal OSHA regulations relating to the utility industry. He is a sought-after speaker nationwide.

Clayton King, Director of Testing and Training, ESCI Inc.
Clayton King received a BSEE from the University of Missouri in 1965 and completed graduate studies at Iowa State University and the University of Missouri. He has more than 40 years of experience in the field of testing products and systems.

As A.B. Chance Manager of Laboratories, he conducted a substantial number of high-current and high-voltage tests for products and methods development of electrical protective equipment. Additionally he was also the Chief Engineer for Personal Protective Grounding and Electronics Measurement products from 1990 - 2001.

His special fields of interest include the high current testing of personal protective grounding equipment and test instrumentation. He began researching and lecturing on the theory of protective grounding in the mid - 1970s. During his career at A.B. Chance he evaluated many grounding products, both as components and in a variety of actual line use situations. During his career he has presented 85 protective grounding classes, participated in multiple technical panels, written 11 technical papers and two books on the subject of personal protective grounding.

Clay King chairs the grounding standards committees of American Society of Testing and Mataerials (ASTM) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) that revise and maintain the current status of protective grounding documents in the United States. He is also the U.S. representative to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for grounding and other worker safety equipment. He is active as a consulting engineer in utility related matters at this time.He has made presentations to the American National Safety Council, the Edison Electric Institute, NEMA, the IBEW, and many electrical utility companies. He is a member of many IEEE, ASTM, and IEC committees and working groups on personal protective grounding, high-voltage metering, and laboratory testing procedures. Mr. King is a registered professional engineer in the State of Missouri.

Course Contents
: This course is intended to help non-technical Utility employees understand the basics of electricity and utility products by offering a overview of distribution and transmission class electric utility products and applications. Classroom presentations will be augmented with samples of HPS products, tours through the Engineering Research Lab, production facilities and the HPS Distribution (Logistics) Center.  
Who should attend: Utility employees who need to understand the basics of electricity and utility products in layman terms.

Directions to Centralia Eligibility:
To be eligible to attend HPS Utility Training, you must be recommended by an authorized HPS Distributor or an HPS Sales Representative. Approval process also includes payment of the Training fee (listed below). Please do not make travel arrangements until notified that you are fully registered to attend.

Registration:
A training fee of $450.00 ($995.00 for the Equipotential Grounding Seminar) per person is payable in advance. The entire registration process, including payment of the training fee must be completed prior to the registration deadline. Registration deadline is eight (8) weeks prior to the start of the session.

To request attendance to one of the HPS training sessions, eligible personnel should request an application form via email at HPSTraining@hps.hubbell.com . Contact information requires a valid email address, as this will be the main course of communication.

Once approved, and the training fee is paid, registered attendees will be contacted by email with a written acknowledgment, stating the date and location of their registered training session.

Please do not make travel arrangements until notified that you are fully registered to attend.

Hotel & Meals:
HPS provided lodging is for three nights at a Hotel of our choice and arranged meals during the actual days of training. Meals include a continental breakfast (as provided by the Hotel each morning), lunches both days of training, and dinner on one training evening. Details concerning dates and locations for the Hotel and meals will be sent during the registration process.

Provided lodging will be non-smoking rooms only. Lodging with smoking rooms will be the responsibility of the attendee. Attendees wishing to stay additional nights or bring guests or family members will be held solely responsible for all additional costs and reservations. Specific meals & defined Hotel accommodations are provided at the discretion of Hubbell Power Systems, Inc., and are not part of the training fee structure.

Please make known any special dietary or accessibility requirements at least six weeks in advance of training.

Substitution & Cancellation:
Substitution with another eligible employee from the same company may occur, as long as the substitution is approved by HPS Sales & Training Staff prior to the start of the registered training session.

Attendees may cancel their registration with full refund up to eight (8) weeks prior to their training session. Cancellations within eight weeks of the training session must be in writing (email) and will require either an approved (same company) substitution for that session or else forfeiture of the registration fee.

Hubbell Power Systems reserves the right to alter or cancel a training session, up to six weeks prior to the start date. If training is cancelled by HPS, registration fees for that training will be returned. HPS liability is limited to refund of the registration fee only.

Dress Code:
We suggest that clothing should be along the lines of business casual for classroom training. No “open-toed” shoes or sandals are allowed during training or facility tours.

Cameras & Pictures:
Participants are allowed to take photos in the classroom as long as they do not interfere with training activities and do not raise safety concerns.

No picture taking is allowed inside any HPS facility other than the classroom.

Cell Phones, PDAs & Computers:
In general, electronic devices should not interfere with training or compromise safety. Electronic devices such as Cell phones and PDAs should be turned off during facility tours.

Use of any electronic device during Classroom Training will be at the discretion of HPS Presenters and Training staff. Non-emergency communications should be scheduled to not interrupt training activities. No picture taking is allowed inside any HPS facility other than the classroom.

Travel Information
Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Training dates have been chosen to facilitate travel on Monday allowing attendance during the entire session. Air travelers should allow for the following (minimum) travel times to and from airports. When departing, please remember to add one or two hours for check in.

  • 3 hours from Kansas City, MO airport (MCI) to Centralia, MO

  • 30 minutes from Augusta, GA airport (AGS) to Aiken, SC
  • 45 minutes from Birmingham, AL airport (BHM) to Leeds, AL
